Sued after the Statue of Limitations

Can I be sued after the statue of limitations has expired? LVNV has sent me what looks like a bill basically threatening to sue me on a debt that I am fairly certain is past the statute of limitations. It says that if I don't get back to them in 30 days that they will assume that the debt is mine & that they will pursue all legal remedies to ensure that I pay this past debt. If I am not mistaken, this was a credit card from college, which is over 10 years ago by this point. Do I even need to respond to this letter? I thought the statue of limitations was 7 years.

The federal Statute pertains to how long a debt can report on you credit report; however, if you are located in a state that has a State Statute of 10 years on a debt then you still can be sued for that debt. You can check your state Statute at Statute of limitations for debt
