i attempted to negotiate a debt with a collection agency. I was able to get the debt settled for about 40 cents on the dollar--not too bad. The amount settled on was about 3,000. I made arrangements to pay 2,500 all at once, and was responsible for paying the remaining 500 a few weeks later. I Paid the 2,500 but was late on the 500. To my horror, the agency said I defaulted on the agreement, they took the entire 3000 dollars and are saying Im still responsible for the rest of the debt. THat means I owe an almost an additional 1000 dollars--so i didnt get a settlement at all. Is this legal? Is there ANYTHING i can do about this because it just seems so unfair. please help.
